A Garbh Sanskar book is a guide to caring for your baby before birth through your thoughts, food, routines and surroundings. Many families start with a book because it’s private, affordable and can be read at your own pace. This guide explains how to choose one, shares five titles handpicked by the Shvasa team, and is clear about what a book cannot do.
Please note: This article is for general information and is not medical advice. Please talk to your doctor or midwife before starting yoga or any exercise in pregnancy or while trying to conceive, and stop if something feels wrong. Shvasa classes complement medical care and do not replace it.
What a Garbh Sanskar book is, and what it isn’t
Garbh Sanskar (also written Garbha Sanskar or Garbhsanskar) is a traditional Indian approach to pregnancy. Books on the topic vary a lot. Some are guides to diet and lifestyle based on Ayurveda, some focus on rituals, and some are workbooks with daily activities. The books aren’t medical manuals, and they don’t replace your doctor.
It also helps to know that the evidence behind Garbh Sanskar as a whole is still developing. A 2024 narrative review in the International Journal of Indian Psychology argues that its emphasis on lowering stress and supporting maternal wellbeing lines up with research on prenatal stress. The same review says that small studies and cultural bias limit the research and calls for larger, more varied studies.1
6 checks before you choose a Garbh Sanskar book
- Look at the author. Is the author a doctor, an Ayurvedic practitioner, a teacher or a writer on spirituality? Each brings a different perspective.
- Check the language and edition. Many titles were first written in one language and then translated. A translation can differ from the original, so look for the edition you will actually read.
- Read the contents page. Does the book cover the months or trimesters you are in? Does it cover practical daily steps?
- Watch the promises. Be cautious about any book that promises a “genius” baby or guarantees outcomes. No book can promise that.
- See whether it points to sources. A book that explains where its health claims come from is easier to trust.
- Choose a format you will use. Print, e-book or both.

- Garbh Sanskar: Ancient Secrets to Give Birth to Genius by Juhi Sohal. English, Kindle edition. The title uses the word “genius”; no book can guarantee that outcome.
- Garbh Sanskar – jevu vavishu aevu lanishu by Devangi Jogal and Nilesh Jogal. Gujarati, Kindle edition, 255 pages, published April 22, 2019.
- Ayurvediya Garbhsanskar in Hindi (आयुर्वेदीय गर्भसंस्कार) by Vaidya Rajshri Kulkarni. Hindi.

Also worth knowing: “Garbha Sanskar: The Amazing Journey of Pregnancy” (A Happy Thoughts Initiative, with a Hindi edition from Tejgyan Global Foundation) and “Decoding Garbhasamskara: Your Guide to a Supraja”.
A few notes on what you may notice. The same author often appears in several languages, so check which edition you are buying. A high price does not mean a better book.
Is there a free Garbh Sanskar book PDF? What to know before you download
Many websites offer “free PDFs” of popular titles. We don’t link to them. Many are unauthorised copies of books that are still protected, and files from unknown sites can carry viruses. Safer options are a library, a publisher’s own store, or authorised e-book stores such as Kindle or Google Play Books, where some of the titles above are available.
