What is Garbh Sanskar?

Garbh Sanskar comes from Sanskrit. Garbh means womb and Sanskar means values or education, so it is often translated as education in the womb. Indian tradition and Ayurveda describe it as caring for a baby's wellbeing through the mother's food, mind and surroundings. It is also written Garbha Sanskar.

VicharThoughts: calm, positive, mindful
AcharBehaviour: gentle movement, a steady routine
SanskarValues: music, mantras, reading

How to choose the best Garbh Sanskar classes

  • Is the teacher certified in Garbh Sanskar?
  • Will they ask which trimester you are in, and adapt the class?
  • Do they ask you to check with your doctor first?
  • Do they avoid promising results for your baby's intelligence or health?
  • Is the class live, or recorded only?

What trusted sources say

What trusted sources say about Garbh Sanskar

Garbh Sanskar is a long-standing Indian tradition. Here is what health guides and a government institute say about it.

Rooted in ancient Indian textsApollo 24|7's guide traces Garbh Sanskar to ancient Indian texts such as the Charaka Samhita and the Vedas, which describe regimens for a pregnant woman covering her diet, daily routine, thoughts and conversations.1 The guide was reviewed by a doctor (MBBS) and last updated on January 13, 2026.
Taught at a government institute of AyurvedaThe National Institute of Ayurveda in Jaipur, a deemed university under the Ministry of AYUSH, offers a 10-week Garbh Sanskar course for BAMS and BNYS students and interns. It describes two approaches: Beeja Sanskar for couples before pregnancy, and Garbh Sanskar after a woman becomes pregnant.2
Not tied to one religionFortis Healthcare's guide says the practice is not specific to any religion.3
Taught live, in small groupsShvasa is trusted by 50,000+ people worldwide. This program is taught live, in small groups, by certified Prenatal Yoga and Garbh Sanskar teachers.

Why women practise Garbh Sanskar

These are ancient Indian techniques, and many women swear by them. That is tradition and personal experience, not clinical proof. Open a card to see what the tradition says, what research does and does not show, and how it fits in the program.

A bond before birth

Garbh Samvad: talking to your baby, every Saturday.

What the tradition says: Practices like Garbh Samvad, talking to your baby, are meant to create an early emotional connection before birth.

What research says: A study of 60 fetuses at term found a heart-rate rise to the mother's voice and a fall to a stranger's voice, so they can tell the two apart.4 That shows recognition. It does not by itself show bonding.

In the program: Garbh Sanskar, every Saturday: talking to your baby, affirmations and chanting.

A calmer mind

Breath, meditation and affirmations aim at calm. Research on anxiety is modest.

What the tradition says: The tradition holds that lowering a mother's stress gives her baby a calmer environment.

What research says: A 2017 meta-analysis of 5 studies of music in pregnancy (1,261 women) found a modest reduction in anxiety, no significant effect on general or pregnancy-specific stress, and study quality rated moderate to weak.5 A scoping review found that most studies of preconception and prenatal stress reported null associations with cortisol.6 So we describe calm as something for you, not a proven effect on your baby.

In the program: Daily Pranayama & Meditation on weekdays, and affirmations in the Saturday session.

Soothing sounds

Chanting and soothing sounds are part of every Saturday session.

What the tradition says: Chanting, positive affirmations and soothing sounds are traditionally said to stimulate a baby's sensory awareness.

What research says: Babies near term respond to voices.4 Whether chanting benefits a baby's senses is part of the tradition rather than a research finding.7

In the program: Chanting and soothing sounds in the Saturday Garbh Sanskar session. Your teachers share the chants.

Food and gentle movement

Garbh Aahar and Garbh Yoga: the Ayurvedic view of eating and moving well.

What the tradition says: Ayurvedic practice emphasises proper nutrition (Garbh Aahar) and gentle movement (Garbh Yoga). Apollo 24|7's guide lists a sattvic diet of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains under the pillar of Ahar.1

What research says: An academic review notes there is still a lack of substantial scientific evidence to substantiate the effectiveness of Garbh Sanskar as a whole.7

In the program: Ayurvedic ideas on food and gentle movement in the Saturday session, with Prenatal Yoga on weekdays.

When can you start?

When can you start Garbh Sanskar?

Most Garbh Sanskar guides say to start as early as you find out you are pregnant.8 Some say it can begin even before conception.1 Fortis Healthcare's guide adds that the third month is often considered a good time to begin a more structured routine,3 and another guide says it can be practised throughout pregnancy, with each trimester focusing on different things.8

The Shvasa program is open to all trimesters, so you can join at the stage you are at. Not sure which week you are in? Use the calculator in "Your 3 months" below.
